Biography:  In 1991 Mike Powell not only broke the most astounding record ever, Bob Beamon's long jump standard of 29'2-1/2", set in 1968 by 2 inches with a leap of 29-ft., 4 1/2in.- but also produced his 29'4-1/2" in the greatest mano a mano battle in field event history. He defeated Carl Lewis, who also jumped his lifetime best, 29'1-1/4", in the World Championships in Tokyo. In one night, with one jump, Powell had ended Lewis's decade of undefeated dominance. Also, in 1991 he was the AAU Sullivan Award winner, won long jump silver medals in 1988 and '92 Olympics, and repeated as world champ in 1993.
