Biography: Jim Beatty won the 1962 AAU Sullivan Award for being the first person in recorded history to run a sub 4:00 mile on an indoor track. In ‘62 he also set eleven U.S records and three world records. Before his record-breaking indoor mile run, he was a running standout at UNC. All-American in 1955 and 1957 in the two-mile run, he also was a ACC champion in the mile in 1955 and 1956. His 3:58.9 at the 1962 Los Angeles Invitational was the first on an indoor track. He was promptly added to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1963 and was later added to the USA National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1990.
